Whilst the country doesn't have a formal Pride taking place each year, Bangkok's Songkran Gay Circuit Party in April is one of the most exciting gay festivals in Asia.

Other cities in Japan that have a few notable queer hangouts include Nagasaki, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima.

The main gay festival in Japan is the Tokyo Rainbow Pride in April/May, based mainly around Yoyogi Park. We keep reading about successful legal challenges being upheld to the country's ban on gay marriage, for example, at the Sapporo High Court and Tokyo District Court in 2024.

For year-round gay nightlife, Soi Paradise in Patong offers a thriving scene.

    Whoever you are, you'll feel this in Japan. The court also ordered the government to legally establish a third gender category to recognize the rights of transgender people. Expect drag shows, boat parties, and a lively parade, typically held in late April across various venues. Every year the Philippines sends their representative to the Mr Gay World competition, and has even won it twice: John Fernandez Raspado in 2017 and Janjep Carlos in 2019.

      The Ni-chōme district remains the hub for Tokyo’s LGBTQ+ nightlife, offering diverse bars and clubs like Dragon Men and AiSOTOPE Lounge.

    • Where to Stay for Tokyo Pride: For LGBTQ+ travelers visiting Tokyo during the Pride celebrations, there are several LGBTQ+-friendly accommodation options to consider. The Constitutional Court stated that calling homosexuals "deviants" or "perverts" constitutes hate speech.

    Current status
    As a matter of fact , in the decision of the 22nd Civil Chamber of the Court of Cassation dated 24.09.2018 and numbered 2015/35120 Main, 2018/19675 , it is emphasized that discrimination due to the sexual orientation of the worker is within the scope of the prohibition (although the concept of "sexual preference" is used with an incorrect terminology) : The prohibition of discrimination can be added to this, due to the employee's sexual preference that does not cause any adverse effects in the workplace.

    Did you know? Taiwan has its own God for homosexual love called Tu'er Shan or the Rabbit God.

    It started in 1982 in San Francisco and has been hosted in a different city ever since, mainly in North America, Europe, and Australia. Siem Reap, the base to visit Angkor Wat, also has a fun gay scene with gay bars like Miss Wong and Barcode.

    In May, there is an annual Pride in Phnom Penh going strong since 2003.

    Whilst this doesn't give any recognition to gay couples, it does allow gay marriage ceremonies to take place without fear of arrest.

    The gay scene of Vietnam

    Despite having a large LGBTQ community in Saigon and Hanoi, the gay scene is not that big at all, with only a handful of queer hangouts. Hotels such as Andaz Tokyo, Park Hyatt Tokyo, The Prince Park Tower Tokyo and the quirky MUJI HOTEL GINZA offer luxurious stays with a welcoming atmosphere for Pride attendees.

    This is because, despite the progressive laws, the country lacks a big gay scene, particularly when compared to more conservative countries like South Korea and Hong Kong.

    Gay Vietnam in a nutshell

    • Gay marriage or civil unions: gay wedding ceremonies are allowed but are not legally recognized and do not offer any rights.

    LGBTQ rights in Vietnam

    Vietnam has never had any anti-gay laws, has always had an equal age of consent for intercourse (17), gays are allowed to openly serve in the military, the right to change your legal gender was introduced in 2017 and single gay people are allowed to adopt.

    The LGBTQ community of Japan is, of course, not without its challenges. So go ahead, click away, and enjoy the perks without the added expense. But as far as Asian standards go, we found Japan to be one of the more LGBTQ-friendly countries in Asia.

    We place Japan high on this list because, from our perspective as foreigners, we feel it is one of the safest and most welcoming nations in Asia.
