On Friday, Ben & Jerry's renamedSupreme Court decision to legalize gay marriage nationwide.
Equality has never tasted so sweet. It said that Parliament was perfectly capable of making the decision itself, although it has yet to do so. Ben & Jerry's writes on its website that in 1989, it was "the first major employer in Vermont to offer health insurance to domestic partners of employees, including same sex couples, and we haven’t spent one minute regretting it."
In 2009, the company celebrated the legalization of gay marriage in Vermont by renaming the "Chubby Hubby" flavor to "Hubby Hubby." A year later, one of Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops in Washington, D.C.
served as the venue for a gay wedding, when same sex couples could first tie the knot in the district.
An estimated 72 percent of Australians support marriage equality, but in November, its Senate rejected the idea of holding a national vote on the issue.
Ben & Jerry’s has previously launched campaigns encouraging support for marriage equality in Germany, Ireland, and New Zealand, but the same-scoop ban is a new approach.
Another Featured Cause
Ben and Jerry’s is also on the ball when it comes to climate change. And that might be what prompted Ben & Jerry’s to do something.
The pint features two same-sex cows on the cover, dressed in wedding attire, and the O’s in “dough” have been swapped out for linking golden wedding bands.

Commemorative pint sleeves can also be purchased online, through the Human Rights Campaign, with 100% of proceeds going towards the fight for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.

25+ Years of Support
This isn’t the first time Ben and Jerry’s has spoken up in support of gay marriage.
And when its home state of Vermont legalized same sex marriage, it took a similar approach, temporarily renaming Chubby Hubby to Hubby Hubby.

Ben & Jerry’s has always been a proud supporter of LGBT rights; it was the first company in Vermont to offer full benefits to same sex couples, and that was way back in 1989.

This ambitious goal is in line with the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - IPCC’s expressed need for the elimination of all carbon pollution within the next 85 years.

Even though its approach might seem silly or trivial, it added fuel to a dialogue that had been stagnating, and has reminded Australians that this inequality is still unresolved (even after two of its neighbors, New Zealand and Taiwan, have already taken the steps to legalize same-sex marriages). The company promises that it will personally deliver all of those handwritten letters to the Australian Parliament before its next session on June 13.
LGBT Equality is one of the nine ideas listed on the “Issues We Care About” section of its website, along with racial justice, democracy, and climate justice.
“Ben & Jerry’s is proud of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision against discrimination as it boldly stands up for equality for same sex couples everywhere,” Jostein Solheim, the CEO of Ben & Jerry’s, said in a press release.
And, this week, the Vermont-based ice cream purveyor is speaking out against Australia’s unwillingness to legalize same-sex marriage, and its protest involves a countrywide ban on same-scoop servings.
But you find out you are not allowed—Ben & Jerry’s has banned two scoops of the same flavor,” the company said in a statement.

Ben & Jerry’s has also placed rainbow-topped postal boxes in each of its Australian shops, allowing (and encouraging) customers to more easily contact their local parliamentary representatives.
If you want to celebrate with your own pint at home, the sleeve can also be purchased online through the Human Rights campaign, with all proceeds benefitting the organization. Back in 2009, they came up with the name “Hubby Hubby” to replace the “Chubby Hubby” flavor in honor of the state of Vermont’s legalization of gay marriage.
Twenty years prior to that, Ben and Jerry’s had begun offering health insurance benefits to the same-sex partners of their employees in 1989.
And, they have been a part of a group of businesses that urged the Supreme Court to end the ban on same-sex marriage.
