Anthony Prince, otherwise known as Gay Tony or Tony Prince, is a nightclub entrepreneur in the GTA IV Era, and the owner of both Maisonette 9 and Hercules.
Indeed, throughout The Ballad of Gay Tony, Luis spends much of his time caring for this adopted “father” whose addiction is leading to some really bad decision making on the part of the elder of the two men. Tony, too, mentions that Luis is like a son to him. He says of growing up in the 1970s, "In my day, gay guys used to be lonely, needy, and lost.
The club regularly hosts VIPs, celebrities, and underworld figures from around Liberty City.
On the other hand, Hercules is a gay club located nearby Maisonette 9 which also attracts members from all walks of life.
He also bears some similarities to Miami club owner Chris Paciello who, like Tony had connections to New York Mafia families and had one of his famous clubs burn down only to open another club later the same year.
This article will explore the background, personality, and role of Gay Tony in Grand Theft Auto IV.
Background:
Anthony “Gay Tony” Prince was born in the early 1960s to a Jewish father and a Puerto Rican mother. Finally, Luis successfully kills Bulgarin, blowing up his private jet before it leaves the country.
Social deviance becomes a means of uniting very different people rather than in dividing them from society.
Tony met Luis Lopez in a prison outreach program, and in 2005, Gay Tony hired him as a doorman and bouncer for Hercules. Both were homosexuals and habitual drug users, although Rubell kept it a secret, got diagnosed with AIDS in 1985 and died of hepatitis in 1989.
Thus, the game is less than retrograde in presenting a rather daring and progressive version of a father-son story, one in which the “father” is a homosexual.
The Oedipal drama that would normally ensue in such stories is inverted, though, perhaps as a result of Tony’s homosexuality. Gay Tony would later be heavily in debt to her father.
Possible real-life inspirations
Gay Tony's influence over the Liberty City nightclub scene is mostly reminiscent of Peter Gatien, owner of the Limelight and other clubs. Luis is not especially threatened by his “father’s” power as neither one compete with one another over a mother or any woman for that matter.
Tony sees a last chance to pay off his debts in buying and selling some $2 million diamonds for a small profit.
